Unfortunately I can't appear making big statements about all the great items I have finished. I've not been busy beavering away knitting but I have been working on my Rowan Exchange gifts. I started with this:

The green kid silk haze has already become the Elbac Scarf from Knitty. It's a bit fluffier than I would have liked but hopefully blocking will help that. The brown wool cotton is in the process of becoming Spencer gloves from Rowan 38. The right glove is done. I was going great guns through the 2nd glove only to realise that I started the right glove again. :( I sat here at 1130pm Sunday frogging the glove. Just need to start again. And yes I am already 1 month late so am even more annoyed with myself.

In addition to the Rowan Exchange I offered to knit some Innocent Smoothie hats for Amelia. But with the exchange trauma this has not happened. Do not worry though, my lovely hubbie who thinks knitting is witchcraft offered to help me out. He's on his 2nd hat and has learnt to cast on, knit and purl and has suddenly realised that it's "just tying knots". Here's the proof (can you tell how proud he is?):

There are reasons why I've not managed to knit or blog recently and they are good, honest.......

1/ Holiday

At the end of June we went to Guernsey for our holiday. I had the BEST time ever and if (when) I win the lottery that's where I'll be heading. It was so friendly, laidback and the sea is never far away - perfect.

We saw the house (Hauteville House) where Victor Hugo spent much of his time in exile from France and would definitely recommend it. It's full of some many different things, bits of art, furniture he built from old cabinets etc and paintings he did. The ground floor is so dark and oppressive then finally you reach the roof/lookout and the sun just streams in. This is where Victor Hugo worked and slept and it's just the most amazing space. The lookout can just be seen at the top of the house (the back white one) in the photo.

We also spent a fantastic day on Sark, cycling, relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet and sea air.

Yes that's me on a bike in the distance.

We stayed in St Peter Port, up above Candi Gardens ,and wandering into town and around the shops and harbours was the exact tonic we needed to the crazy life we have back home.

2/ Birthday & Red Bull Air Race

Then we had my birthday and this year I had a fantastic treat as well as lovely pressies. I was taken to the Red Bull Air Race in London. It was great day out and sun shone (even got a bit sunburnt staring up at the sky. Ok, even my chin and eyebrows were burnt but I am celtic!).

Yes the helicopter is upside down!! See.....

I want one of those.

As I said I got lovely pressies (funnily no knitting items - perhaps my lack of commitment is too obvious?); yummy night cream, tv version of Emma DVD, Adobe photoshop elements that should make this easier and money to buy my new bike (Sark really rubbed off on me). So exciting. Which brings me to...

3/ Moving

We've decided to move house. We managed to sell our house while away on holiday then have an offer accepted the next week. This will let me live much closer to work, hubbie will have ~ the same or a bit less travelling and there will be more time for knitting, reading, swimming, fun, basically just living. It'll be really sad to leave our house. It's our first real home, well the first one we owned so it really felt like ours and the first place I've felt gave me the homely feeling I haven't had since I went away to uni all those years ago. We've only been here 2 years but it feels like much longer but moving will give us so much more and we'll make that home as well. Anyway it's all chugging along (finger's crossed) and I just have to be patient.

I'm back

It's been a while I know but I haven't been idle, I promise. The Cinderella Bag for the Purlescence competition is done, photos have been taken and the pattern written up. Robynn has sent me a copy of the soon to be published pattern and it's so exciting. Knitting the wire outer bag wasn't nearly as difficult as I was expecting but I did end up with a big blood blister from trying to cut the wire with a pair of scissors, not a good idea. As I was speeding through the wire knitting hubbie decided to try and take some arty shots.

On the wire outer bag there's a mixture of sequins, beads and some gorgeous Swarovski crystals that I found in John Lewis. You can see them better here.

The trickiest part was putting it all togther; hanging inner bag in outer, feeding the wire through the top, making said wire lie straight and getting handles attached securely without spoiling the line of the bag.

But it's all done now and here's a sneak preview.

The full pattern will be available from Purlescence soon.

I also managed to finish the Sarah Dallas cabled hot water bottle for my mum. It was orginally meant to be for her birthday but I kind of failed there but I finished in time for Mother's Day. To be honest I could compile a whole post moaning about this piece of knitting but I'll just give a quick overview.

Firstly either I'm completely stupid (confused?) or the pattern is wrong. I'm willing to accept either as true but something just was not right when I came to the decreases. To do knit decreases on the first row you had to start on the wrong side (even though the way it was written led me to believe it should be the right side. See I told you I was confused) but after a few rows of decreases this led to unseemly ridges in the fabric. In the end I ripped all I done and kept with the pattern while doing the decreases. Also if I followed the pattern (starting decreases on wrong side) the stockinette stitch top came out as reverse. Another lot of ripping and making it up as I went along sorted this out. Then the fun of making up started. I stitched the front and back together, stitched the flap into place and found the cover to be too big for my hot water bottle (NB if a pattern doesn't have sizes and only states "fits average hot wtaer bottle"-BEWARE). AARRRGGGGHHHHH, after all that ripping. Well I reckoned if I undid the bottom flap seams I could pull that bit up and all would be well. After a scene reminescent of a action movie where the hero decides which wire to cut I was convinced I had the stitch up thread. You can guess the rest. As I unpicked the "seam" a huge hole started appearing. HELP!! Considering this happened late Tuesday night and the cover had to be posted on Thursday morning to make it home in time I'm amazed I managed to retain my composure. I tied up all the lose ends, re-examined the photo in the book to discover that the seam had been sewn to take in much more of the cover. Thankfully this allowed me to incorporate the big hole I'd managed to cut in the stupid thing and all was well. And to top it all I couldn't even phone my mum for some sympathy as it was all a secret. Here's a photo of the offending article to prove I really did manage it. (Sorry, that wasn't the quick overview I had intended)

And if anyone can tell me where I went wrong, please do. There are other things I'd like to make in this book but this experience has put me off a bit and I don't want to waste time or money. So any words of wisdom will be gratefully received.

I've also been up to another couple of things that have kept me busy. The spare room is now painted. The horrible orange fake beech furniture we had clashed so badly that we had to paint it too. The cupboard makeover paint we used was so fumey we could only do so much at a time and it needs so long between coats that it feels like we've been doing it forever (perhaps it has been forever). Anyway it's done now and I've just hung the curtains.

Finally it was our 3rd wedding anniversary at the beginning of the month and I made hubbie a photobook with all our memories from our wedding day until now. It took forever but brought back so many memories. Here's one of the funniest to cheer your day. I call it "Bear in Tree"!

Distraction from my lack of knitting

Very little knitting has taken place recently. Between the cold and work I'm so tired every time I sit down I tend to fall asleep. Not conducive to knitting. I managed to get to Hobby craft to get a few more bits for my Cinderella Bag but as that took up most of Saturday there wasn't time for much else. The inside bit of the bag is almost done but as it's just garter stitch there's not much to talk about there. I promised the pattern by the end of the month so I'm going to have to get a move on, especially as this weekend I'll be painting the ceiling and getting the first coat on the walls of the spare room then on Sunday we're off to Cirque Du Soleil. We saw La Nouba on our honeymoon and enjoyed it so much. Unfortunately not much knitting has taken place. I have the cold and my hands are so sore so I can only knit for a short while. The only knitting has been my "Cinderella's Bag" for Purlescence. I need to get the bag completed and the pattern written up by the end of the month as they will be publishing the winning and runner-up entries and I said I could be finished by then. Bit stressed as mostly I've just slept when out of work this week and I need to get to Hobby Craft from some more wire bits, so a bit of a trek in store this weekend.

On a much more positive note I am making some progress on my resolutions.

The sleep thing is happening (mostly because of the cold) and therefore I've managed to get my train instead of driving.

I've bought the paint for the spare room (Dulux Provencal Pink) and this weekend all the cracks will be filled in preparation.

I purchased a small shaker rail in a gorgeous powder blue for the kitchen and it complements the yellow walls perfectly. If only I could afford to buy more from this shop but small things I love in my house make such a difference so I will continue with this.

I found a link to the perfect book for me using my sewing machine more - Bend the Rules Sewing. It sounds perfect and looks interesting even though it has stuff for beginners. Pity I have to wait until the summer for it. At least that will give me some time to knit!

Now if only I could find time to knit and do some exercise I'd be well on my way.

New Year Resolutions

I've been thinking recently about what I want to do with this year. Last year just vanished and I achieved virtually nothing, well not quite but it feels like I lost a lot of time. I've decided that I want to spend more time on the things I want to do, appreciate the good bits of my life more and focus on them and perhaps look after myself a bit, especially after all that's happened in the last few years ( look at one of those life events/stress tests and I covered most of them in the last few years).

In October 2005 we moved into our new house. Until now we've lived in rented places with magnolia walls and cream carpets. Being a new build house of course our new place has magnolia walls and cream carpets - AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!! So resolution #1 is that 2007 will be the "Year of Colour". I chose the colour for the spare room at the end of the year so that will be the first job. And I've already got tester pots for our room and have narrowed it down to a few choices of blue (why are the colours in the paint brochures nothing like real life?).

I have still never completed anything more than a bag for myself although I have one cardigan underway (Pampas) and another waiting in the wings (Kim Hargreaves kit). So this year I will complete 2 items for myself.

Socks - I am always so impressed with pictures of handknitted socks and would love to be able to produced something so amazing myself. I bought 2 Opel sock kits last year. These will be completed this year. And if successful a book purchase may follow.

My brave purchase last year was my sewing machine and this year it will be used for more than taking up one pair of jeans. I have been wondering about this book for a while now as I think it could provide a few interesting projects for me to attempt. This may be an early treat this year.

Another house one - as we were students for so long (7yrs for me) we still have that mentality and often buy things because "they'll do". This year I want to buy things that I love and that make my house more homely even if this means waiting longer. To start this off the hunt is on for a kitchen table (most are too large).

Creating a proper craft room/study. We have a small 3rd bedroom and at the moment this very much a dumping ground, so much so I often shut the door and pretend it doesn't exist. This year I want to buy a large work table so I have somewhere to produce cards again, sew and block knitting and hubbie can use it for his painting too.

Sleep - having moved so far away from work I have a long commute which results in being home late so I'm tired and everything takes longer to do so I'm late to bed and so the vicious cycle continues. If I sort this one out, including getting the train instead of driving some of the worst roads ever (including A14), there will be more energy and time to allow me to complete all my other resolutions. Perhaps this should have been #1.

And no resolution list would be complete w/o this one - exercise and eating well. Of course I want to lose weight but mostly I'd like to get fit enough so I could cycle the 4 miles to our local town and not have to queue for parking and fit everyone else that wants to drive everywhere.

Now I've written them down I have to keep them. I may have a resolution audit in the summer just to make sure I'm making progress.

On a quick knitting note a bit of exciting news. Purlescence are running a Story Tellers design competition and I was a runner-up in the "What would Cinderella Knit?" competition. This is very exciting as I've been knitting less than 2 years but also very scary as I know have to knit up the item and write a pattern. Have a look at the winning entries, their amazing. I can't believe how much effort people have made and what beautiful entries were submitted. You can definitely tell I'm an unartistic scientist.

Combat with the hosts of hell

AKA Hogmanay

As we are about to sit down to out New Year's dinner (yes at this time and not in the afternoon) I was investigating about why we (the Scots) first foot but no one else seems to. Last night at midnight DH went outside, bottle, chocolate (Shortbread alternative) and coal in hand and rang the bell. Being tall, dark-haired and bringing all the necessary gifts he is the perfect first foot. At home dad was always sent out to do the deed. Also whenever we go to visit anyone on the first few days of the New Year we MUST take "something" (usually shortbread) with us. It's bad enough me being a redhead female but if I was to turn up empty handed who knows what disaster would befall the household.

This article in the Telegraph describes our way of doing it well. Many a year, when living in Scotland, we would still be up at 5am in our next door neighbours house playing Triv and drinking a nice, warm whisky. Of course this was just to keep the devil at bay.

And this is why I have tomorrow off work, no self-respecting Scot would chose to work on the 2nd (some have to, I know) and am only about to have dinner at dinner time!!

Christmas Knitting

Happy New Year

No new knitting to report, hoping to get started on my Kim Hargreaves kit asap. But in the meantime some photos of the Christmas knitting I managed to complete. I finished the gloves and hat for my roommate in enough time but was in such a rush to get them sent to her I forgot about taking photos until they were all wrapped up and addressed. Thankfully I received this photo of the hat in its new home.

Finishing the Rooster scarf for my sister was another matter altogether. The knitting bit was fine but then came the crocheting. It actually turned out much easier than I thought it would and the scarf itself was finished without pain. Oh, but I forgot about the flowers. And not one or two, no ten. Ten whole flowers to crochet for a complete beginner, not a fast job and a bit fiddly with having to work so many stitches into the round. It took longer than I thought but I was taking the scarf home to my sister so there was plenty of time - right? Yes for crocheting but what about the packing, card writing, present wrapping-forgot that part. A mad couple of evenings crocheting, alongside all the other Christmas chores, and I was left with this, two nights before we due to drive home.

That left one evening to sew all the ends in and attached the flowers. Why did I have all that panic? I even had time to model the scarf before it was wrapped up.

So all's well that ends well. I didn't manage to do any more on mum's hot water bottle cover but compared to leaving her birthday present from all of us under my tree when I went back to Scotland and having to track a new one down there and arrange a refund for the forgotten one that's nothing! At least she'll have a surprise another time.

Merry Christmas. Hope you all had a great one.

We're just back from home (Scotland) and I'm catching up. Just a bit busy, what with the run up to Christmas and all the nasty bugs that I keep catching. I've finished the 2nd glove for my old roommate's Christmas so just need to finish sewing up the first glove and I can get that posted this week. The knitting of my sister's scarf is done just the crocheting to do (learn!). No photos though, sorry.
Other than that I got a new toy when my parents came to visit. A sewing machine! May not seem very exciting to most people but considering I was banned (yes that's right banned) from the sewing machines at high school this is a major step forward for me and involved much bravery. So far I've been practicing on random bits of material and learning to wind bobbins and thread the needle but this weekend I was finally brave enough to sew a proper thing. I took up my jeans. And here's the proof.

The first attempt was a bit wonky - especially as I'd never used a free arm or gone round the way before - so after that had been unpicked I started again and all was well.

The productive weekend continued today and we put up our Christmas tree. It's our first real tree. My parents always had a real tree but hubbie's folks didn't and we've had a plastic tree the past few years as we were living in rented places. We nearly didn't get a real one as we head home for Christmas but we decided a real one for 2 weeks before Christmas was worth it even if we come back to a pile of needles. And it'll only be our carpet that's full of needles, no landlord to worry about. Anyway, we're dead chuffed, it's such a nice tree and sits perfectly in our room.

We put our new nativity set out too. It's a bit worrying though. Either the makers got confused and thought Joseph was a shepherd or it's a very PC version of the nativity and Mary is a single parent. And yes I know, Jesus shouldn't be out yet (Dad's already pointed this out) but as we won't be here Christmas eve/Christmas day I thought it was better he arrived earlier than not at all!

I also had my first reflexology session this weekend. It had been a present from hubbie for my birthday but as I was waiting on conventional medicine to sort my whiplash out I didn't book it. The voucher was due to run out in January so off I went to the complementary health centre. I have to say the reflexology was great but then I do love having my feet rubbed. It seemed to drain my sinuses and relieve my sciatica. The reflexologist even picked up on my funny ears and low blood sugar problems even though I hadn't mentioned them. I think I was having a bit of a healing crisis this afternoon though (sinuses painful, back spasming, headache and soooooo tired) but I feel so much better already. Think I might be tempted to try it again.

Liberty

Last night I made my very first trip to Liberty haberdashery. Everyone always raves about it and my roommate from Uni recommended it. Somehow though I'd never made it there. I started knitting not long before we moved to the wilds of the Fens and since we moved north of Cambridge London seems so far away and our frequent trips just died off. Liberty called me down but I felt that I could not justify a trip. All I can say now if why, oh why did I not go sooner. What a wonderful department it is. So much yarn in such a small space (JL should definitely take note), all so neatly arranged and such gorgeous colours.
Unfortunately having done my Christmas shopping this month there was no spare knitting money to treat myself with. But I did finally manage to find a 10mm crochet hook. Pampas requires this for finishing (not that I'm anyway near that point) but I couldn't find one for love nor money. Mum had even offered to scour Scotland for one for me as it was looking so desperate. I should have known Liberty wouldn't let me down.
I also got another couple of goodies. Every year we each get a new bauble for the Christmas tree, a tradition started by my family, and Liberty's Christmas shop gave us plenty of choice. Our Christmas tree started off very gold from the cheap baubles we got when we first got our own tree but after 5 years it looking much more multicoloured and cheery. I also bought a Advent calendar card for my mum as she always sends us a calendar each so we thought she should have one of her own. And hubbie treated to me a lavender sachet in Liberty fabric as a special wee treat.

On the knitting front I have been doing some but not nearly enough. My sister's scarf is over half done on the knitting front and I think I've mastered how to crochet (well I hope so). This weekend will be spent finishing that and hopefully finishing the 2nd glove for my old roommate's Christmas pressie. Then perhaps I can start on my Kim Hargreaves kit as well as getting my mum's hot water cover going again.

Rush hour traffic vs knitting - the ultimate battle!

Last weekend I had great fun ordering more knitting stuff. It's not like I don't have enough on the go at the moment (and even more just started, or ripped, or about to be started projects under the bed) but I decided to knit the Rooster flower scarf for my sister for Christmas and hey, if I was paying for postage for one item I might as well buy everything I wanted at once. So a reasonable sized order was placed. I had also been drooling over several Kim Hargreaves kits and as I didn't get to go to Ally Pally and see all the exciting things and pretty yarn my lovely hubbie decided to treat me to one. Another order was placed. And the waiting began. I am a VERY impatient person and don't do waiting so I was so excited when I received an email from Kathleen Hargreaves on Monday saying my kit had been sent: Sunday ordered, Monday in the post, Tuesday here, Wednesday collect from depot- perfect for an impatient person. Then I received an email from Get Knitted, my parcel was in the post - yippee, 2 parcels to collect!

But no, one minor flaw - I forgot that I live in Cambridgeshire and work in Hertfordshire and have the joy of getting around Cambridge at rush hour to get to the Royal Mail depot to collect my package. Well I reasoned with myself it's 30 miles and I had 1hr 15mins between finishing work and the depot closing, of course I could make it. Ha, the universe thought, it's not going to be that easy (my family are jinxed but more of that another time). On Wednesday I ran out of work, made hubbie jump in the car as I zoomed passed the park and ride and headed northwards. The parcels were in my reach. And then the M11 came to a complete standstill. No, NO, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The only option was to cut through Cambridge and hope that there would be no traffic in town (yeah right, Eilidh). At this point I lost all hope and despite a whole lot of false-hoping and rushing I only arrived home, 5 miles from the depot, after it had closed.
Finally today I managed to collect my parcels and here they are.

The Kim Hargreaves kit to make Ruby. I really like this cardi. It reminds me of one I had in my late teens that made me feel all grown up. I chose the Rosso red yarn. I really wanted it in the discontinued Spanish Red and from all the swatch pictures Rosso looked far more pinky coloured. Thanks to the Rowanettes who help me out and reassured me that it was a nice scarlet red and not a "scary colour" as I had feared. Now I have received it I'm really happy with my choice.

And my other parcel. It contained the Rooster scarf kit. It's a gorgeous scarf and my sister will love it but there's just one problem. I've not crocheted in ~15yrs. I have no recollection of how to and I'm a bit worried I won't be able to learn again in time. I remember at Guides it was much easier than knitting so surely if I've relearnt to knit, crocheting won't beat me.

Also in the package was Louisa Harding Winter Muse Classics book (the jumper on the front in my current favourite colour, cerise, sold it to me), a glove kit so I can make subtley stripey gloves for hubbie, some Knit Klips that I hope will help sewing up the currently abandoned Pampas, and my first 2 pairs of Addi Turbo circular needles (ready and waiting for when I have time to make Grumperina's Picovoli.

A little about me

48 things you could care less about
1. First Name Eilidh
2. Were you named after anyone? Yes, my great gran. She was actually called Helen but all the family called her Eilidh (Gaelic for Helen).
3. When did you last cry? Can't remember but I cry far too easily. This is something I'm trying to stop especially when nasty work brings it on. It's not worth it!
4. Do you like your handwriting? It depends sometimes I surpirise myself with how neat and artistic it looks but most of the time it totally shows that I'm a eccentric scientist.
5. What is your favourite lunchmeat? Hmmmm, difficult one. I like really nice good ham, not the plastic stuff.
6. If you were another person would you be friends with you? I hope so but I do wonder if I'd be irrated by my bossiness and stubborness.
7. Do you have a journal? Nope. There aren't enough hours in the day or interesting things in my life to warrant one.
8. Do you still have your tonsils? Yes.
9. Would you bungee jump? Probably not. Might have done when I was younger but I can't even abseil now cos of fear of heights. Getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower in a lift was almost too much for me.
10. What is your favourite cereal? Special K red berries. I love the yummy sweet raspberries.
11. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Not usually. My steel toe capped tariners at work haven't been untied in 3 yrs.
12. Do you think you are strong? Not very but if I'm angry I can be. And I do have to carry 20kg+ at work and drag >100kg on pallets so maybe I'm not as bad as I think. Mentally I can be very strong, mostly stubborn.
13. What is your favourite ice-cream flavour? Don't really like ice cream and I shouldn't eat it. But if I am tempted it's by belgian choc type stuff.
14. Shoe size? UK 5- 5.5
15. Red or pink? Oh, that so depends on my mood. But it can't be light pink as I have red hair. Cerise is currently my favourite colour.
16. What is the least favourite thing about yourself? My temper. And my pear-shaped hips!
17. Who do you miss most? My parents/family, I live 400 miles away and only see them a few times a year. They've just been to visit and whenever they leave I realise how much I miss home.
18. Do you want everyone to send this back to you? As I haven't sent this then no. I like reading these things on people's blogs though.
19. What colour pants, shirt and shoes are you wearing? Black trousers, cerise t-shirt, charcoal cardi and no shoes, only berry coloured slippers.
20. Last thing you ate? Some of the butternut squash and roast pepper soup we've just made. Homemade turkey meatloaf with salad and tomato bread coming up soon.
21. What are you listening to right now? Right now, Coronation Street which is on in the background. Other than that I'm generally listening to Radio 1 on my way to work in the car so I get a bit of everything.
22. If you were a crayon what colour would you be? A bright colour. Turqouise perhaps.
23. Favourite smell? I don't really have a sense of smell, too many years in a chemistry lab. From what I can smell, a cake baking or Clary Sage or Geranium aromatherapy oil.
24. Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? My mum. I phoned her to ask her opinion on which Kim Hargreaves kit I should order.
25. The first thing you notice about people you are attracted to? Whether they have an honest, friendly face. And I like broad chested, dark haired men.
26. Do you like who you stole this off? I don't know them but I enjoy their blog.
27. Favourite drink? White wine (sauvignon blanc) or Champagne, on a special occassion. If not an appropriate time for wine then a nice mug of Earl Grey tea.
28. Favourite sport? Rugby or F1 for watching. Badminton for playing.
29. Eye colour? Blue or green. It seems to change depending on my mood/what I am wearing.
30. Hat size? Don't know but it must be small, I love hats but struggle to find ones that don't slip down over my eyes.
31. Do you wear contacts? NO!! I have a real problem with eyes, especially people going anywhere near them so don't think I could. I wear glasses for the cinema, driving at night and reading the projector screen at work.
32. Favourite food? Crisps, beef and onion ones from M&S. Have cut down in general since seeing that cooking oil advert.
33. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings.
34. If you could live anywhere in the world where would that be? By the sea, a wild, non-touristy beach. I lived across the road from the beach in St Andrews for 4 yrs and it spoilt me. I love being blasted around by the wind while hearing and smelling the sea. The photo on my profile is me playing on Camber Sands, Kent in November!
35. Summer or winter? Summer is too hot down here, it was much more pleasant at home. I like cold, dry weather but it's so dark and depressing in Winter. I guest then I'm more Spring.
36. Hugs or kisses? Hugs make everything better.
37. Favourite dessert? Stewed rhubarb with rich tea biscuits on top then chilled, perfect comfort food. (I'm not a big pudding eater).
38. Who is most likely to respond? No idea.
39. Least likely to respond? Again no idea, this blog is so new.
40. What books are you currently reading? The Long Way Round by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. I saw some of it on tv and was hooked. The fact I would love a bike doesn't come into it of course.
41. What's on your mouse pad? I'm using a touchpad on my laptop.
42. What did you watch on TV last night? Hope & Faith, CSI, Law and Order Special Victims Unit.
43. Favourite sounds? The sea.
44. Rolling Stones or Beatles? Not that fussed either way but if pushed I'd say Rolling Stones.
45. The furthest you have been from home? Johannesburg, RSA with work (to our production facility out there).
46. What's your special talent? My "Ears of the Wolf". I hear all sorts of conversations I shouldn't even when people speak quietly in another room! (My parents and hubbie still forget this).
47. Where were you born? Canterbury, Kent but I am definitely Scottish. My dad was working at Whitehall for the MOD at the time but we moved back "home" when I was 11months old and I wasn't even Christened until we were back in Scotland.
48. Who sent this to you? I stole it from Serendipity's blog.

Domesticity

When we moved into our new house a year ago one of the first things we did was to plant a crab apple tree. I've ALWAYS wanted a blossom tree and after reading a magazine article about how fantastic crab apple trees are my lovely hubbie agreed decided a crab apple would be better than a cherry tree as we could make jelly. Come spring the tree was covered in gorgeous blossom, ooh I just love it!

I still wasn't convinced that we would actually have apples come the autumn. But low and behold we did. Unfortunately we lost quite a few of our apples in the BIG winds in September and an emergency mission was launched one Friday morning before work to rescue the rest.
Having consulted the WI and made a trip to Lakeland we were all set.
The apples were chopped and stewed with cinnamon

and strained through this great contraption (oops, think hubbie needs some new slippers) to produce this.

The juice and sugar were then boiled to give the set and we produced a whole 1 jar and a little bit of crab apple jelly. It's not much I know but considering the tree has only been in the ground for a year and so many apples were lost to the weather (and the cats) I'm very proud of our little tree. And next year having practiced on this we should be able to cope with the huge crop of apples our tree will provide.

Progress

Well it's taken a while but finally I've actually done some knitting and had time to update the blog. It was a bit of a mad month but we had a lovely relaxing week away in the Peak District and because of the rain (everyday, why did it rain everyday?) ,which prevented walking, I managed to get quite a lot of knitting time. And progress has been made.
The Louisa Harding hat and gloves are well underway. The hat is finished, well just needs one more flower.

One glove is almost done, just needs the outside edge sewn up, hence the wonky shape at the pinky in the photos, and the 2nd glove is well underway.

I then decided for a bit of change, variety being the spice of life and all that, and started the Sarah Dallas cabled hot water bottle cover. This is going to be a birthday present for my mum, it's a "special" birthday for her this year so I wanted to give her something I'd made especially.

I love cables and it's amazing how fab they look compared to how (un)difficult they are. On a few of the cables the stitches next to them are a bit loose, hopefully when finished and blocked it'll look better. This is knitting up much quicker than I thought it would but my parents are coming to visit next week so this will have to go into hiding.

Finally Pampas. I've not forgotten this but the pattern repeat got a bit tedious. The back is finished and I've started on the front. The warmer weather again has also meant it's not been so pressing to get this done. I have been wondering does it ever get cold enough down here to warrant such a big cardi, perhaps it will be kept for visiting home.

The wool isn't nearly as purple as it shows in this photo. It's actually Rowan's Big Wool in Mulberry that is much redder than this. Need to practice this photography thing.

Knitting

Here it finally is - some knitting. Well the beginnings of anyway. I have so many half finished scarves in my knitting basket that it's embarrassing. To start with it was all I could knit then I moved to bags, much more interesting and suddenly I've got brave enough to try a cardi for myself and to knit for someone else, not my mum or hubby, all spurred on by the Rowan Exchange. The only problem is that I have 2 half finished scarves and a ripped bag and a baby blanket and the list goes on all staring at me and now I'm torn. All this guilt was raised as I had to hide some of the wool as the recipient of the finished object is coming over for a BBQ tomorrow and in hiding of this I came across all my UFOs I'd managed to banish to the back of my mind, oh well.
But for now my resolve is strong and I will finish the cardi so I can wear it this winter and the other items are Christmas pressies so they must have priority over scarves. So more on the disasters another time.... And here's the very exciting parcels I received in the post (why is buying yarn online so much more exciting?).

The arrival of Rowan 40 was a very exciting but also very sad time for me. There's so much I want to knit and with my celtic colouring so much that would suit in the colours shown. But what for someone who's never knitted more than a simple bag? Patterns, charts, shaping, colour work - it's all too much, and simply reading the patterns had my brain turn to mush :( But there in the pages it shone through - Pampas. Easy pattern, bit of shaping and perfect to take home for the freezing East of Scotland Christmas. And I'm already more than half way up the back :)
And as for the other yarn, it will make (magically by itself, perhaps?), the Sarah Dallas hot water bottle cover for my mum (blue and pink) and Louisa Harding's hat and gloves for my old roommate (as in she used to be my roommate, not that's she's very old). It's such soft wool and the colour is so her, I hope she likes it.

Welcome

I've finally bitten the bullet and got myself a blog. The turning point was receiving a mass of wool after the excitement of Rowan 40 arrriving. The pile of BIG wool for Pampus along with the wool for a couple of Christmas pressies has been sitting for the past week staring at me. I decided it would be fun to photograph this starting point and how these evolve. Pampus is especially exciting as it's my first ever garment. And my disasters as I go forth will be here for all to see. Anyway a photo of my small wool stash for these projects will be here soon.
